Greene SWCD Named Outstanding District for Northern Iowa Accepting Outstanding Soil & Water Conservation District Award from Jerry Fine, Conservation Districts of Iowa Vice Chairperson are Kyle Niles of Paton, Johnetta Harms of Jefferson and Mike Minnehan of Churdan, Greene SWCD commissioners. Jerry Fine, CDI Vice Chair, described Greene SWCD as "Solutions Oriented." After a visit to the Des Moines Water Works in 2000, they had a brainstorming session to find ways to manage the nutrients entering the Raccoon River. The commissioners have set a series of goals to reach their objective. First, water monitoring, watershed projects and promotion of conservation programs are utilized to assess the natural resources and promote the need for conservation locally. The state and federal cost-share programs are used to help meet soil erosion goals and lighten the sediment and nutrient load heading down the watershed. Students receive conservation materials, field days are hosted, scholarships are awarded and a website was developed to add to the conservation education and outreach programs. The district has helped landowners meet land protection challenges with new and emerging technologies as they become available. 'Greene SWCD Commissioners have earned the respect given to them in the conservation community.' |
