Conservation
Poster Contest 2007
Posters
created for the 2007 Soil & Water Conservation Poster Contest
featured the theme "Conservation's Power." Elementary
and middle school students attending school or living in Greene
county were invited to create a poster using this theme.
Students from Jean Ferguson's 3rd grade
at East Greene Elementary as well as Denise Menke's 4th grade at
Paton Churdan Elementary participated with each student entering
a poster in the contest.
Winners pictured below received a Spruce
tree for their efforts, while the other participants were given
a Rubrum (red) Maple seedling.
Paton Churdan winners
pictured below are Jacob Bundt and Jennifer Nichols.
Faith Hanson and Tyler Beger
were East Greene third grade winners.

6th
Grade Outdoor Classroom
Squirrel Hollow is a rural Greene County
park set in a timber area near the Raccoon River. In May, two hundred
sixth graders from throughout the county enjoy mini courses on subjects
as diverse as: Birds of Prey, Wild Ducks & Geese, Cooking up
Pollution, Timber Wildlife, Gun Safety, Greene County birds, Ecosystems,
Fish and Bees and other conservation classes. Instructors are volunteers,
teachers, DNR and Conservation employees.
Below is Carolyn Schwartz, NRCS Conservation
Technician 'Cooking up Pollution' for Paton Churdan students at
the 32nd Outdoor Classroom on May 9.

Each year the District and Soil &
Water Conservation Club as well as the Greene Soil & Water District
provides scholarships to high school seniors living in Greene County
and planning to major in agriculture or natural resources.
Congratulations to the following seniors!
This year a $1,000 scholarship will be
awarded to Lisa Tronchetti, Jefferson Scranton High School 2007
graduate entering a 4-year program at ISU. This is funded through
the generosity of Greene Soil & Water Conservation Club and
Harold Puffer, a Greene County landowner.
A $500 scholarship from Greene SWCD will
be awarded Robert Carman, Jefferson Scranton High School 2007 graduate.
Because conservation education is important
at a young age, individuals and businesses donate funds used for
this purpose. Conservation booklets are offered to elementary teachers,
6th grade outdoor classroom expenses are paid, and a $500 scholarship
is provided to a senior majoring in agriculture or natural resources.
New Conservation Club members are welcome:
send contributions to Greene Conservation Club, 1703 N Elm, Ste
2, Jefferson, IA 50129. Suggested memberships are: $25 for family
or individual and $50 for businesses, however any donation is welcomed.
Women
in Agriculture Meeting
The District and NRCS regularly provide
information to Greene County women landowners and producers concerning
conservation programs and practices.
On Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, twenty-one
women accompanied by Kevin Kordick, NRCS District Conservationist,
participated in the Renewabel Energy Tour. Tour sites included Tall
Corn Ethanol where the process to turn corn into ethanol was explained,
Renewable Energy Group at Ralston to hear how soybeans are used
for biodiesel, and Hardin Hilltop Wind Farm, site of wind turbines
just being constructed in Greene County.
